4. AI and Machine Learning

Noema uses artificial intelligence to provide personalized learning experiences. We rely on the following third-party AI services to deliver core functionality. Before you can use AI-powered features, the app will ask for your explicit consent and explain what data is shared.

4.1 Third-Party AI Service Providers

We use the following third-party AI services:

  • OpenRouter (New Computer Corporation) — LLM Routing: We send learning topic names, subject-matter context, and lesson content to OpenRouter, which routes requests to large language model (LLM) providers such as Google and OpenAI, to generate lessons, quizzes, topic suggestions, and plan structures. For the AI Tutor Chat feature, the messages you type and your conversation history within that chat session are also sent to OpenRouter to generate responses. Your name, email address, or account credentials are never included in these requests.
  • OpenAI — Text Embeddings: We send topic names and content descriptions to OpenAI's embedding API to generate numerical representations used for content recommendations and search. No personal identifiers are included in these requests.
  • ElevenLabs — Text-to-Speech: We send AI-generated lesson and podcast text to ElevenLabs to produce audio narration. Only the educational content text is transmitted; no personal data is included.

4.2 What Data Is Sent

  • Content Generation: Topic names, learning objectives, and subject-matter context.
  • AI Tutor Chat: Messages you type in the chat, your conversation history within that session, and the lesson content being discussed.
  • Embeddings: Topic names and content descriptions for search and recommendation purposes.
  • Audio Generation: AI-generated educational text for podcast and lesson narration.

We do not send your name, email address, account credentials, payment information, or device identifiers to any third-party AI service.

4.3 Your Consent

Before using AI-powered features for the first time, the app will present a clear disclosure of what data is shared and with whom, and will ask for your explicit permission. You may withdraw this consent at any time through the app settings, which will disable AI-powered features such as the AI Tutor Chat.

4.4 Third-Party Data Protection

Each of our third-party AI service providers is contractually obligated to handle data in accordance with their published privacy policies and applicable data protection laws. These providers maintain industry-standard security practices, including encryption in transit and at rest, and do not use the data we send for training their own models unless separately disclosed by the provider.

4.5 Content Personalization

Your learning history and preferences are used to customize content recommendations and adapt lesson difficulty. This personalization is performed by our own systems and does not involve sharing your personal data with third-party AI providers.

4.6 No Third-Party AI Training

We do not sell or share your personal data with third parties for their AI training purposes.

4.7 Opt-Out

You may withdraw your AI data consent through the app at any time, or contact us to opt out of having your data used for AI model improvement while still using other parts of the Service.
